Q: How may I make an appointment at The Laser Skin Center Medical Spa?
A: Go to our Contact page. We will gladly Email you available
times on a given day and confirm via the same method. Alternatively you may call 617-266-5555 and speak
to our office manager, Cindy, who will make arrangements for your complimentary consultation.
Q: Is there a charge for consultations at The Laser Skin Center Medical Spa?
A: There is no charge for initial consultation with either Dr. Krausser or one of our nurse case
managers. Dr. Spiegel charges a nominal $75.00 fee for consultation, which is credited toward
any cosmetic aesthetic or surgical procedure.
Q: Just how is hair removed via laser?
A: What we are actually doing is creating an optical (light) energy in the Laser device which is attracted
to the pigment (color) contained in the hair shaft, travels down the hair shaft, disabling the hair follicle, thereby
preventing regrowth. Several treatments are necessary, around 7 or so, to achieve a level of clearance approaching
90%, with which most people are very satisfied. Treatments would be scheduled at approximately 6-10 weeks apart,
depending on the area of the body treated.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Discomfort or pain is a relative term, and each individual is different so there is no “pat”
answer to this question. However, of the Lasers that we use for photoepliation (laser hair removal) each one has some
form of proprietary skin chilling so as to minimize patient discomfort. In addition, we can also use topical
anesthetics to numb the area prior to treatment.
Q: I’ve heard that only people with dark hair and light skin can have this treatment. Is that so?
A: Older laser devices were best suited for the fairer skinned individual with dark hair. However, with the
advent of the newer Lasers, especially the 1064nm ND-YAG Laser, treatment of even the darkest skinned individuals
can be accomplished with outstanding safety. PFB (pseudofolliculitis barbae) and ingrown hairs in darkly skinned
persons can be completely eliminated with this device. Another revolutionary development was the introduction of
the IPL-RF Laser designed and FDA approved for the permanent hair reduction of white, blond, gray and certain red
shades in all skin types. This device has demonstrated approximately 75% reduction with 8-12 sessions.
Q: Is there a down side to this? Can I get skin cancer from this?
A: There is absolutely no clinical evidence to even remotely suggest that determal Laser application
for the purposes of hair removal is at all harmful. Think about it logically-extremely short-lived (in milliseconds)
burst of optical (light-not cumulative effect x-radiation) are transmitted into the upper mid-portion of the skin,
they immediately dissipate back out into the room environment, with no possible ill effects on glands, muscles or
organ systems. Obviously, as a precautionary measure, pigmented moles are not lased. Proper adherence to technique
and utilization of professional prowess facilitates treatment.
Q: What is the cost for laser hair removal?
A: In general, fees for laser hair removal procedures have decreased in the
past 2-3 years with the advancements in technology. We afford our clients the option of paying per treatment or
purchasing a “treatment package” of 7 visits at the discounted fee. Quite frankly, the cost for this treatment
is “reasonable” given the level of technology involved.
Q: What should potential client look for in the Laser hair removal facility?
A: First, and foremost, be careful with these newer “chains” that have sprung up in Massachusetts
the last few years. Often employing extremely high-pressure sales tactics with only one Laser on-site and
marginally trained staff; they are best avoided all together. Further, I would view with skepticism any faculty
that “guarantees” results as these are medical procedures and it cannot be ascertained prior to treatment, the
precise degree of hair reduction in any individual. The Laser Skin Center Medical Spa offers its clients the
very latest in Laser technology, fully trained competent staff and on-site physician supervision by Drs. Jeffrey
Spiegel and Russell Krausser.
Q: How can rosacea be treated at The Laser Skin Center Medical Spa?
A: Rosacea is a fairly common disorder primarily affecting individuals with lighter skin
tones and of Irish/English and some Northern European backgrounds. Telangiectasias (broken capillaries) of the
nose and cheeks are a hallmark of the condition. Our pulsed dye 585/595nm vascular lasers and IPL device target
the red blood cells in the tiny vessels and coagulate them without pain and any disruption of the outer skin
surface (epidermis). A number of treatments will likely be necessary, each lasting less than 1 hour, and you may
return to work or other activity immediately following treatment.
Q: I have brown spots on my face and the back of my hands. Can you help that?
A: Solar Lentgo (brown spots) are non-raised, concentrated areas of excessively pigmented skin
attributable to prior sun exposure and can occur in all skin types. In lighter skinned individuals laser or IPL
treatment is quite effective. Dr. Krausser has achieved excellent results in lentigo removal by combining a response
to a series of medical solution peels and daily use of hydroquinone-4%. In all instances, though, frequent daily
application of a strong (SPF 45) sun block is advised.
Q: I am a woman of 50 with some small lines near the corners of my eyes and above my upper lip. I’m
not ready for a facelift yet – what can you recommend?
A: Of course, we would need to schedule a consultation to see firsthand the nature and extent of
any “wrinkling”. Non-ablative laser treatment utilizing the Cooltouch 1320nm device is an excellent method of
stimulating one’s own collagen production to fill in small lines and wrinkles near the eyes, on the forehead and
cheeks and around the mouth. Deeper lines and wrinkles respond nicely to dermal filling (Restylane, Radiance) and BOTOX.
Q: I read recently about a procedure that many Hollywood stars have had done. I think it was called a
Photofacial - do you perform this and just what is it exactly?
A: Photofacial RF is the latest development in the non-surgical “facelift” treatment arena. The
procedure itself was developed by Dr. Patrick Bitter, Jr., a dermatologic surgeon in California and Dr. Stephen
Mulholland, a Toronto plastic surgeon, in the last one year’s time. Dr. Krausser and Dr. Spiegel, uniquely certified
in this procedure in Boston, have performed it since March 2004. A state-of-the-art laser light and controlled beam of
radiofrequency (ultra high) energy is introduced painlessly through the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin to
erase sun spots, freckles and broken capillaries, tighten pores and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Serial treatment,
six times, every three weeks, is typically prescribed. Most patients will demonstrate considerable improvement in their
facial complexion and anyone from age 20 to 70 is a reasonable candidate. Depending upon individual circumstances,
Drs. Krausser and Spiegel may augment this treatment with medical strength peels, BOTOX, and other procedures.
